Roll tape. Or maybe just that joint.

A reporter is planning to use heroin, LSD and marijuana and go on a drinking binge. OK, I can smell the punchline: What else is new? Just this: He’ll do it on the air, part of a TV talk show in the Netherlands. The reason, we learn from the Associated Press story, is that the show’s producers “just want to talk about subjects that are part of young people’s lives.” No one really explained how this on-air tripping would actually be informative or insightful, but never mind. It must be. This is Europe, after all. If this were the United States, we could safely assume it was all for ratings. But since Europeans are by definition above such crass considerations, that can’t be the reason. Dutch authorities aren’t sure how to play this one. These are illegal drugs we’re talking about — even in the Netherlands — but a free press is, well, free. And this is, um, journalism, right?

    Keep up the good work,
